Outboard Repair in Tavares, FL
Running Lake Dora, Lake Eustis or the Dora Canal out of Tavares? I service and repair Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki and Tohatsu outboards for Tavares boaters: oil changes, gear lube, water pumps, spark plugs, diagnostics and repair, with an itemized estimate you approve before any work starts.

Spark plugs
Plug replacement and inspection for clean starts and smooth throttle.

Computer diagnostics on supported Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki engines, plus hands-on testing.
General repair
Won’t start, runs rough, loses power: I find out why and tell you what it takes.
Outboard care for the Harris Chain of Lakes
Tavares sits right on Lake Dora, and from there the Harris Chain opens up: through the Dora Canal to Lake Eustis, and out to Lake Harris. Those are longer runs than a lot of Central Florida boating, and a season of them puts real hours on an outboard.
What I see most on motors that run lakes like these:
- Overheating or a weak tell-tale stream. Usually a worn water pump impeller, or an intake clogged with weeds or debris.
- Water or metal in the lower unit oil. A regular gear lube change catches it before the gearcase fails.
- Hard starting or rough running after the boat sits. Often fuel-related, especially in Florida heat.
- A stumble at the throttle. Fouled or worn spark plugs are a common, cheap fix.
None of these are exotic. Caught early, they’re routine maintenance. Caught late, they end a weekend at the ramp.
- Call or book online and tell me what the motor is doing.
- I diagnose it and email an itemized estimate.
- You approve it online, I do the work and test it, and you pay the invoice online.
Questions from Tavares boaters
Do you come to Tavares?
For select jobs, yes. Most work is fastest at the shop in Clermont, where everything is on hand. Tell me what the motor is doing when you book and I’ll let you know.
My outboard overheats after a run across Lake Dora. What’s wrong?
The most common causes are a worn water pump impeller or a blocked water intake. Shut the motor down when the overheat alarm sounds and have the cooling system checked before running it hard again; running hot can damage the powerhead.
How often should I service an outboard I run on the Harris Chain?
Follow the intervals in your owner’s manual. Most outboards need oil and gear lube changed at least once a season, and the impeller replaced on a regular schedule. If you’re not sure when it was last done, a service visit is a good reset.
Which brands do you work on?
Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki and Tohatsu. I have computer diagnostics for supported Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki engines; Tohatsu gets hands-on troubleshooting.
Do you do warranty work?
No. I’m an independent mechanic, not a factory dealer, so manufacturer warranty repairs go through your brand’s dealer. I’ll tell you up front if a job is better handled there.

Based in Clermont and working the lake towns around it.
