Trailer boaters: keep the motor ready between trips

Most Mascotte boaters trailer to the water, whether that’s the lakes around South Lake County or over to the Clermont Chain of Lakes. A trailered boat can spend more time on the driveway than on the lake, and that’s hard on an outboard in its own way.

The problems I see on boats that sit between trips:

  • Fuel going stale. Hard starting and rough idle after a few weeks parked.
  • Dead or weak batteries. A boat that sits drains its battery, and low voltage causes strange problems.
  • Impeller damage from dry starts. Starting the motor without water, even for a few seconds, can ruin it.
  • Old gear lube. Low hours don’t mean the lower unit oil is still good.

A service visit before your busy season, and good habits between trips, keep a trailered outboard starting on the first try.

Getting your boat to me from MascotteYou’re already trailering, so dropping the boat at the shop is usually easiest, and it’s where all the tools and diagnostic software are. For some jobs I can come to you; ask when you book.
  1. Call or book online and tell me what the motor is doing.
  2. I diagnose it and email an itemized estimate.
  3. You approve it online, I do the work and test it, and you pay the invoice online.
FAQ

Questions from Mascotte boaters

Do you come out to Mascotte?

For select jobs, yes. Most work is fastest at the shop. Tell me what the motor is doing when you book and I’ll let you know.

Can I run my outboard in the driveway between trips?

Only with cooling water supplied, using flush muffs or a test tank. Never start an outboard dry, even for a few seconds; it can ruin the water pump impeller. Follow your owner’s manual for flushing.

What should I do before my boat sits for a few weeks?

Follow the storage steps in your owner’s manual: treat or manage the fuel, keep the battery charged, and flush the motor after your last trip. If it acts up when you come back to it, book a diagnostic.

How do I pay?

Your invoice arrives by email and can be paid securely online by card. No account needed.

Do you do warranty work?

No. I’m an independent mechanic, not a factory dealer, so manufacturer warranty repairs go through your brand’s dealer. I’ll tell you up front if a job is better handled there.
